Overview
The existing Nurse Practitioner privilege has been updated to Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant. This update gives physician assistants the ability to write medical orders for patients.
Additionally, a new Doctor Must Co-Sign Orders privilege has been created, letting administrators require a doctor’s co-signature for orders written by nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
Configuration
You can find both settings on the Privileges tab of the User Information Management screen.
Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant
The Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant privilege will be enabled by default for any user in your organization who currently has the Nurse Practitioner privilege.
Doctor Must Co-Sign Orders
The Doctor Must Co-Sign Orders privilege is disabled by default and can only be enabled if the Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant privilege is enabled for that user.
When the Doctor Must Co-Sign Orders privilege is enabled, orders submitted by a nurse practitioner or physician assistant appear on the Orders Requiring Doctor Signature tab (formerly Verbal Orders) on the Current Orders screen.
Here, doctors can view and acknowledge all verbal orders and orders requiring a doctor’s signature.
